Understanding Symmetry
A shape has line symmetry if it can be folded along a line so that both halves match exactly. It has rotational symmetry of order n if it maps onto itself exactly n times during one full rotation of 360°. A shape with no rotational symmetry has order 1. IGCSE 0580 tests: identifying the number of lines of symmetry and the order of rotational symmetry for regular polygons, special quadrilaterals, and other shapes.
Step-by-Step Method

Count lines of symmetry
Ask: along how many different lines could you fold the shape so both halves match? A regular n-gon has n lines of symmetry.

Find the order of rotational symmetry
Rotate the shape and count how many positions give identical appearance before returning to the start. A regular n-gon has order n.

Apply to special quadrilaterals
Square: 4 lines, order 4. Rectangle: 2 lines, order 2. Rhombus: 2 lines, order 2. Parallelogram: 0 lines, order 2. Trapezium: 1 line (isosceles), order 1.

Exam Tips for Symmetry
- A regular n-sided polygon always has n lines of symmetry AND rotational symmetry of order n.
- A parallelogram has NO lines of symmetry (even though it looks symmetric) — it only has order 2 rotational symmetry.
- Order of rotational symmetry is at least 1 (every shape maps onto itself after a full 360° rotation).
- Diagonal lines of symmetry through corners (rhombus, square) are different from lines through midpoints of sides (rectangle, square).
