Cambridge Lower Secondary Maths — Year 7 (Stage 7)

Year 7 is the first stage of the Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics programme (curriculum framework 0862). It builds the foundations your child will rely on for Checkpoint at the end of Stage 9 and, later, IGCSE Maths. The focus is on securing number sense, starting formal algebra, and developing clear geometric and statistical reasoning.

Cambridge organises the maths curriculum into four strands: Number, Algebra, Geometry and Measure, and Statistics and Probability. In Year 7 students extend their work with integers and negative numbers, deepen their understanding of fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio, begin writing and solving simple algebraic expressions and equations, reason about angles and 2D shapes, and learn to collect, present and interpret data.

Looking ahead to IGCSE?

Every Year 7 topic connects forward to IGCSE (Cambridge 0580). For example, the work on fractions, decimals and percentages becomes the IGCSE Number topic, and early algebra grows into the IGCSE Algebra and Graphs topic. Starting at Stage 7 means IGCSE Maths feels familiar rather than frightening when your child reaches it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cambridge Lower Secondary Year 7 (Stage 7)?

Year 7 is Stage 7 of the Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics framework (0862). It is the first of three stages (Years 7–9) that prepare students for the Checkpoint test and, eventually, IGCSE Mathematics.

How does Year 7 maths help with IGCSE later?

Year 7 builds the number, algebra, geometry and statistics foundations that IGCSE assumes you already have. A strong Stage 7 means students start IGCSE confident rather than playing catch-up.

Is this aligned to the Cambridge curriculum?

Yes. The topics, learning objectives and vocabulary follow the four strands of the Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics curriculum framework (0862) at Stage 7.
