Cambridge Lower Secondary Maths — Year 7 (Stage 7)
Year 7 is the first stage of the Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics programme (curriculum framework 0862). It builds the foundations your child will rely on for Checkpoint at the end of Stage 9 and, later, IGCSE Maths. The focus is on securing number sense, starting formal algebra, and developing clear geometric and statistical reasoning.
Cambridge organises the maths curriculum into four strands: Number, Algebra, Geometry and Measure, and Statistics and Probability. In Year 7 students extend their work with integers and negative numbers, deepen their understanding of fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio, begin writing and solving simple algebraic expressions and equations, reason about angles and 2D shapes, and learn to collect, present and interpret data.
Number
Integers & Negative Numbers
Order, add, subtract, multiply and divide positive and negative integers, and use them in real contexts like temperature.
Place Value, Rounding & Estimation
Understand place value in whole numbers and decimals, round to a required accuracy, and use estimation to check answers.
Fractions, Decimals & Percentages
Find equivalent fractions, convert between fractions, decimals and percentages, and carry out the four operations with fractions.
Ratio & Proportion
Write and simplify ratios, share a quantity in a given ratio, and solve simple direct proportion problems.
Algebra
Algebraic Expressions
Use letters for unknowns, collect like terms, simplify expressions and substitute numbers into expressions.
Equations & Formulae
Solve simple linear equations using inverse operations and substitute values into simple formulae.
Sequences
Continue and describe number sequences, find term-to-term rules, and generate sequences from a rule.
Geometry and Measure
Angles & 2D Shapes
Use angle facts on lines and at a point, classify triangles and quadrilaterals, and reason about their properties.
Perimeter, Area & Volume
Find the perimeter and area of rectangles, triangles and compound shapes, and the volume of cuboids.
Statistics and Probability
Looking ahead to IGCSE?
Every Year 7 topic connects forward to IGCSE (Cambridge 0580). For example, the work on fractions, decimals and percentages becomes the IGCSE Number topic, and early algebra grows into the IGCSE Algebra and Graphs topic. Starting at Stage 7 means IGCSE Maths feels familiar rather than frightening when your child reaches it.

What is Cambridge Lower Secondary Year 7 (Stage 7)?
Year 7 is Stage 7 of the Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics framework (0862). It is the first of three stages (Years 7–9) that prepare students for the Checkpoint test and, eventually, IGCSE Mathematics.
How does Year 7 maths help with IGCSE later?
Year 7 builds the number, algebra, geometry and statistics foundations that IGCSE assumes you already have. A strong Stage 7 means students start IGCSE confident rather than playing catch-up.
Is this aligned to the Cambridge curriculum?
Yes. The topics, learning objectives and vocabulary follow the four strands of the Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics curriculum framework (0862) at Stage 7.
