From C to A: Yuki's IGCSE Maths Journey at ISKL Kuala Lumpur
ISKL · Kuala Lumpur · Extended tier · 11 months
Yuki had moved to KL from Japan and was finding the transition to Cambridge IGCSE Maths challenging — not because she lacked mathematical ability (she had a strong Japanese maths foundation) but because the Cambridge examination requires a specific approach to written working, verbal explanation within solutions, and question interpretation that is very different from the Japanese system. She came to Teacher Rig in Year 10 Term 3, scoring C on her ISKL internal assessments. Over eleven months we focused on bridging from her Japanese maths strengths to Cambridge's specific requirements — particularly showing working in Cambridge-expected format, answering what the question actually asks, and building familiarity with Cambridge's question phrasing and vocabulary. Her mathematical ability was never in doubt; what changed was her examination strategy. She achieved A in the Cambridge examination.
"Yuki knew the maths but the exam style was completely different from Japan. Teacher Rig understood exactly what she needed and delivered it."
Questions About This Journey
Do students from Japanese or Korean schools need special help for Cambridge IGCSE Maths?
Often yes — not because they lack mathematical skill but because the Cambridge examination style (showing working, written explanation, question phrasing) is very different from East Asian exam formats that reward speed and accuracy over written reasoning.
