From A to A*: Mei Ling's IGCSE Maths Journey at Uplands International Penang

Mei Ling was already a strong mathematics student at Uplands when she came to Teacher Rig six months before her IGCSE examination. She was scoring A consistently on past papers but wanted A* — and knew the gap between the two required precision in the topics she found hardest: calculus differentiation questions, circle theorem proofs, and vectors in three steps. Over six months we focused exclusively on these areas and on time management in Paper 4. Mei Ling completed twelve full papers under timed conditions, and the error patterns revealed that her main losses were in algebraic presentation rather than conceptual errors. Fine-tuning her working style — showing intermediate steps, labelling diagram work, and writing out substitutions — added approximately 8 marks to her typical score. She achieved A* in May/June, a result she and her family were thrilled with.
