From C to B: Ling's IGCSE Maths Journey at Labuan International School
Labuan International School · Labuan · Core tier · 8 months
Ling's family live on Labuan island, where specialist tutoring is genuinely scarce — the island's small population and remote location make local specialist support almost impossible to find. Teacher Rig's online sessions were the only realistic option for specialist IGCSE Maths support. Ling was taking the Core tier and had scored C on her Labuan International internal assessments. Over eight months of weekly online sessions we worked through the Core syllabus systematically, with particular focus on the topics where Core tier marks are most available: number (fractions, percentages, standard form), basic algebra, and statistics. Ling's approach was methodical and she benefited greatly from having a consistent structure to her preparation. She achieved B in the Cambridge examination — a one-grade improvement that she was justifiably proud of, particularly given the challenge of preparing without any local specialist support.
"Being on Labuan, we had no options for specialist help. Teacher Rig online was perfect — professional, structured, and it worked."
Questions About This Journey
Is Core tier IGCSE Maths worth taking seriously?
Absolutely. A strong B at Core is a genuine qualification that supports further education in many pathways. For students who will struggle significantly on Extended, Core tier with a strong B or even A* is more valuable than an E or U on Extended.
