From E to C: Farah's IGCSE Maths Journey at Selangor International School

Selangor International School · Shah Alam · Extended tier · 16 months

Farah had significant mathematical anxiety when she started working with Teacher Rig — a student who had convinced herself she 'wasn't a maths person' after years of struggle. She was scoring E at Selangor International School and her parents were wondering whether Extended was the right tier. Teacher Rig's assessment identified that Farah's mathematical reasoning was fundamentally sound but her procedural skills — the actual mechanical steps of algebra, substitution, and working through a problem — were very weak and needed rebuilding from first principles. The first four months were almost entirely foundational: basic algebra, fractions, percentages, and linear equations. The pace was slow but deliberate. Farah began to gain confidence as procedures became automatic. By the end of Year 10 she was scoring Ds. By mid-Year 11, Cs were achievable. She achieved C in the Cambridge examination — modest by some standards, but a transformation for a student who had barely believed an E was avoidable.

"Farah went from hating maths to feeling proud of herself. The C grade is wonderful but the confidence she gained is even more valuable."

— Parent of Farah

Questions About This Journey

Can a student with severe maths anxiety succeed in IGCSE Maths?

Yes — anxiety is usually a symptom of procedural gaps, not a fundamental inability. When the gaps are identified and systematically addressed in a patient, non-judgmental environment, anxiety typically reduces as competence increases. A C at Extended tier is a real achievement for any student.
