From C to A: Alvin's IGCSE Maths Journey at Rafflesia International Kajang

Alvin came to Teacher Rig at the start of Year 10 Term 3, struggling with algebra and frustrated that his strong arithmetic skills weren't helping him in IGCSE. He was scoring C on internal assessments at Rafflesia International, primarily because algebraic manipulation — the core skill that unlocks every Extended topic — was not yet fluent. Over thirteen months we built algebraic fluency systematically: factorising, solving quadratics, manipulating surds, working with algebraic fractions. Once algebra was solid, the other Extended topics opened up naturally. Statistics, trigonometry, and coordinate geometry all came more easily once the algebraic tools were available. By Year 11, Alvin was one of the more confident Extended students in his year group. He achieved A in May/June — a two-grade improvement that he earned through consistent, systematic work.
