Area Formulas Comparison – Every Shape
A complete comparison of all area formulas needed for IGCSE Mathematics 0580, from basic shapes to circles and sectors.
Basic Shapes
Rectangle: length × width. Triangle: ½ × base × height. Parallelogram: base × height. Trapezium: ½(a+b) × h where a and b are parallel sides.
Tips
- Height must be perpendicular to base
- Trapezium: average the parallel sides × height
- Triangle is half of rectangle
Circles and Sectors
Circle area: πr². Sector area: (θ/360) × πr². Semicircle: ½πr². Remember to use radius, not diameter.
Tips
- Always use radius (half diameter)
- Sector is a fraction of full circle
- θ must be in degrees
3D Surface Areas
Cube: 6s². Cuboid: 2(lw+lh+wh). Cylinder: 2πrh+2πr². Sphere: 4πr². Cone: πrl+πr² where l is slant height.
Tips
- Don't forget the base(s)
- Sphere and cone formulas are given
- Draw nets to visualise
