Transformations
Reflect, rotate, translate and enlarge shapes on a coordinate grid, and describe each transformation fully.
Overview
A transformation changes the position or size of a shape. In Year 8 students carry out the four key transformations — reflection, rotation, translation and enlargement — on a coordinate grid, and learn to describe each one precisely. Describing a transformation fully, not just performing it, is a skill examiners reward at both Checkpoint and IGCSE.
What You Will Learn
- Reflect a shape in a mirror line, including the axes and lines like y = x
- Rotate a shape about a point through 90° or 180°
- Translate a shape using a column vector
- Enlarge a shape by a positive whole-number scale factor from a centre
- Describe a given transformation fully
Key Vocabulary
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Reflecting a shape the wrong distance from the mirror line
- Rotating in the wrong direction or about the wrong point
- Reading a column vector upside down (top number is across, bottom is up or down)
- Describing a transformation incompletely, e.g. saying 'rotation' without the angle, direction and centre
What Comes Next
In Year 9 and at IGCSE this extends to fractional and negative scale factors, combining transformations, and vectors, within the IGCSE Transformations and Vectors topic.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a transformation need to be described fully?
Each transformation needs specific details: a reflection needs the mirror line; a rotation needs the angle, direction and centre; a translation needs a column vector; and an enlargement needs the scale factor and centre. Missing a detail loses marks even if the drawing is correct.
How do I read a column vector?
A column vector has two numbers stacked. The top number tells you how far to move across (right if positive, left if negative) and the bottom number how far up or down (up if positive, down if negative).
