7 Signs Your Child Needs an IGCSE Maths Tutor

By Teacher Rig ·

Knowing when to get extra help is genuinely hard — every student has off weeks, and not every dip needs a tutor. But some signals reliably indicate that a student would benefit from specialist support rather than waiting and hoping. Here are seven.

1. Grades Are Slipping, Not Just Wobbling

One disappointing test is normal. A downward trend across several assessments is a pattern, and patterns rarely fix themselves.

2. “I Don’t Get It” Has Become “I Hate Maths”

When difficulty hardens into avoidance and a fixed belief that they’re “just not a maths person,” confidence has become the problem on top of the content.

3. Homework Takes Far Too Long — or Doesn’t Happen

Maths homework that triggers stress, takes hours, or quietly stops getting done usually signals gaps that make every question feel impossible.

4. They Can’t Explain Their Own Working

A student who gets answers but can’t say why is pattern-matching, not understanding — and that breaks down as questions get harder.

5. Earlier Topics Keep Causing Trouble

If foundational gaps (algebra, fractions, negatives) keep resurfacing, new topics built on them will keep collapsing until the foundation is fixed.

6. The Class Has Moved On and They Haven’t

In a large class, a student who falls behind often stays behind, because teaching can’t pause for one student.

7. The Exam Is Approaching and Confidence Isn’t There

As the exam nears, a persistent lack of confidence — distinct from normal nerves — is a sign that targeted support could change the outcome.

One Sign Is a Watch; Several Is a Signal

A single sign may be a passing phase. Several together is a clear case for acting sooner rather than later.
