Why December Is the Most Important Break for IGCSE Maths
For Malaysian Year 11 students sitting IGCSE in May/June, December is the pivotal holiday. By December, school has covered approximately 70–80% of the Extended syllabus. Mock exams have been returned. The real exam is now 5–6 months away.
December done correctly can move a student from D to C, or C to B, before they even return for the January term.
Week 1 of December: Diagnostic and Topic Repair
If you have your mock paper and mark scheme, spend the first week working through every missed question and understanding why each mark was lost.
If you don’t have the mock paper, complete one past paper under timed conditions. Mark it. Record the marks lost per question.
From this, identify your top 3 weakest topics. These become the focus for Week 2.
Daily time commitment: 1.5–2 hours of focused maths. Not more — December fatigue from the end of term means sustained concentration is difficult in the first week.
Week 2 of December: Targeted Topic Drilling
Spend 3–4 days per topic:
- Day 1: Review the concept (notes, Teacher Rig session, video explanation)
- Days 2–3: 10–15 past paper questions on that specific topic only
- Day 4: Review errors and mark scheme
By the end of Week 2, your 3 weakest topics should be noticeably stronger. Test this by doing 5 fresh questions per topic without referring to notes.
If you are working with Teacher Rig: 2–3 intensive sessions in Week 2 aligned to the identified topics is the most effective use of holiday tuition time.
Week 3 of December: First Full Past Paper of the Year
In Week 3, sit a full past paper — Paper 2 and Paper 4 — under strict exam conditions. Time yourself. No calculator on Paper 2. No interruptions.
Mark it after. Compare your raw score to your mock score. If improvement is visible, the December plan has worked. If not, investigate why and adjust.
Final days before return: Rest. Sleep properly. Leave the maths alone for 1–2 days before school restarts.
