Which IGCSE Maths Topics to Revise First

By Teacher Rig ·

How to Prioritise IGCSE Maths Revision

One of the most common mistakes in IGCSE maths revision is starting with the easiest or most familiar topics — because they feel comfortable. But the exam is won by recovering marks in weak areas, not extending strength in strong areas.

The most effective revision sequence is:

  1. Topics with the highest mark allocation
  2. Your weakest topics within those high-mark areas
  3. Topics where partial credit is easily earned with moderate preparation

High-Value Topics on Paper 4 (in order of typical mark allocation)

TopicTypical marks on Paper 4Difficulty to improve
Trigonometry (sine/cosine rule, 3D)10–14Medium
Algebra and functions12–18Medium–Hard
Probability8–12Medium
Mensuration (complex shapes)8–12Easy–Medium
Vectors8–12Hard
Statistics (histogram, CF)8–10Easy–Medium
Circle theorems6–10Medium
Calculus6–10Hard
Matrices4–8Easy (once learned)

The Revision Priority Rule

If you have 3+ months: Work through every major topic systematically, spending proportional time on high-value topics.

If you have 1–3 months: Focus on 3–5 topics where your current score is 30–60% (significant improvement possible). Topics where you already score 80%+ need maintenance only; topics where you score below 30% with 6 weeks to go need realistic assessment — partial credit strategy may be better than full mastery.

If you have less than 1 month: Focus exclusively on partial-credit strategies for weak topics and error reduction in strong topics. No new content.

The Partial Credit Strategy

For topics where full mastery is not achievable in the time available, teach your child to write the first 1–2 lines of working for every question type they recognise. Cambridge’s M marks are awarded for method, even if the subsequent calculation is wrong or incomplete. A student who writes the correct setup of a trigonometry problem earns 1–2 marks even if the calculation is wrong.

How Teacher Rig Prioritises

Teacher Rig builds a priority revision list from the student’s diagnostic data in the first session. This list drives every subsequent session plan — no time is wasted on topics where marks are already being earned consistently.
