IGCSE Maths vs GCSE Maths: What's the Difference?

IGCSE Maths vs GCSE Maths: The Key Differences

Malaysian parents often ask about the difference between IGCSE and GCSE, particularly when UK university entry requirements mention “GCSE mathematics.”

The Short Answer

IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is Cambridge’s international version of the GCSE, designed for students outside the UK. It is sat by students at Malaysian international schools and international schools worldwide.

GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the UK national qualification, sat by students in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Is IGCSE Accepted in Place of GCSE?

Yes — almost universally. UK universities explicitly accept IGCSE as equivalent to GCSE for entry requirements. When a UK university states “GCSE Mathematics at grade C/4 or above,” an IGCSE pass at grade C is accepted in place of this.

Cambridge’s IGCSE is specifically designed to be internationally portable and UK-university-accepted.

Differences in Grading

GCSE (England, post-2017)IGCSE (Cambridge 0580)
Grade scale9–1 (9 highest)A*–G (A* highest)
Grade 4 equivalentApproximately CStandard pass
Grade 7 equivalentApproximately AApproximately B–A

For university entry purposes, Cambridge provides equivalency tables. A UK university that requires “GCSE grade 6” can be checked against the Cambridge equivalency document.

The Syllabus Difference

GCSE and IGCSE Extended have very similar content. Some differences:

  • IGCSE Extended includes topics like matrices and some probability notation that are slightly different in GCSE
  • GCSE (England) now uses the 9–1 scale and has slightly different paper weightings
  • IGCSE is available in both Core and Extended versions; GCSE is a single tier (with separate Higher and Foundation papers)

Which One Does Your Child Sit?

If your child attends a Cambridge-affiliated international school in Malaysia, they sit IGCSE 0580 — not GCSE. The two qualifications are structurally separate, even though they are similar in content and equally accepted by universities.
