IGCSE Maths tuition in Malaysia spans a wide price range, and the hourly rate alone is a poor guide to value. Understanding what drives the cost — and what actually produces results — helps families spend wisely.
What Drives the Price
Three factors move the price most: format (group classes are cheaper per student than one-to-one), the tutor’s specialism (a Cambridge 0580 specialist commands more than a generalist covering many subjects), and delivery (in-person carries travel and premises costs that online doesn’t). A large group class with a generalist sits at the low end; specialist one-to-one sits higher.
Why the Cheapest Option Often Costs More
A cheap group class can be false economy. In a class of fifteen, a student who’s stuck rarely gets individual attention, and weak topics go unaddressed for weeks. One-to-one with a specialist costs more per hour but typically needs fewer hours, because every minute targets that student’s gaps. Value is measured in grade improvement per ringgit, not ringgit per hour.

Online specialist tuition has widened access and often improved value: no travel costs, a specialist available regardless of location, and pricing that isn’t tied to a physical centre. For families outside the major cities, it’s frequently the only way to reach a genuine 0580 specialist at all.
How to Judge Value
Ask what you’re actually buying: Is the tutor a 0580 specialist? Is it genuinely individualised? Does it include diagnosis and a plan, or just generic content? Those answers predict results far better than the headline rate.
