Switching from IGCSE Core to Extended: When and How

By Teacher Rig ·

Should Your Child Switch from Core to Extended?

If your child is currently entered for IGCSE Core mathematics (Papers 1 and 3) and you are wondering whether they should switch to Extended (Papers 2 and 4), this guide answers the key questions.

Why the Question Arises

Parents typically ask about switching when:

  • They realise that a Core C grade does not satisfy university requirements (see the university requirements guide)
  • Their child’s Core performance is strong and Extended seems achievable
  • A teacher or tutor has recommended reconsidering

Can You Switch? Yes — Within Deadline

Cambridge allows schools to change a candidate’s entry from Core to Extended up to the Cambridge entry deadline. For May/June, this deadline is typically in early February. For October/November, it is typically in July.

Your child’s school exams officer manages this change. It requires a form submission to Cambridge and may involve a small administrative fee.

Should You Switch? The Key Questions

1. How much time is left until the exam? If 4+ months remain, a switch from Core to Extended is almost always worthwhile for a student who wants to keep university options open. If fewer than 2 months remain, the decision is more nuanced — discuss with Teacher Rig.

2. What is the student’s current performance level? A student scoring 50%+ on Core practice papers likely has the foundation to achieve at least a D or E on Extended. With specialist tuition, a C on Extended is achievable from this starting point with 3–4 months of preparation.

3. What are the student’s university plans? If any STEM, business, economics, or science pathway is possible in the future, Extended is strongly preferred — see the Core vs Extended guide.

What Changes When Switching

The student transitions from Papers 1 and 3 (Core) to Papers 2 and 4 (Extended). Additional topics that appear only on Extended — vectors, matrices, functions, advanced trigonometry, calculus — must be added to the preparation plan.

A student who switches with 3–4 months remaining needs:

  • 2 sessions per week with Teacher Rig
  • Focused drilling on Extended-only topics
  • Full past papers from Extended (not Core) papers

Teacher Rig’s Role in Switching

Teacher Rig has guided several Malaysian students through Core-to-Extended switches. The diagnostic session after a switch immediately identifies which Extended topics need priority attention and builds a realistic timeline.
