IGCSE Maths Parents FAQ: Your Questions Answered

IGCSE Maths: Parents’ Most Frequently Asked Questions

Is IGCSE maths hard?

IGCSE 0580 Extended is a rigorous qualification, but it is designed to be achievable across a wide ability range. A typical grade distribution includes A*, A, B, C, D, and E grades. Most students who attend international schools in Malaysia and prepare adequately achieve at least a C. With specialist preparation, most can achieve B or above.

My child is in Year 10. Is it too early to start tuition?

No. Year 10 is an excellent time to start — it allows gaps to be addressed as they form rather than after they accumulate. Year 10 tuition typically runs at one session per fortnight and increases in Year 11.

My child is in Year 11 with 3 months until the exam. Is it too late?

No. Three months of focused specialist tuition is sufficient for a one-grade improvement in most cases. The key is efficiency — targeting the highest-mark topics with identified gaps rather than covering everything equally.

What is the difference between Core and Extended?

Core has a maximum grade of C. Extended covers more content and is graded from E to A*. Most international school students in Malaysia take Extended. Core closes university pathways unnecessarily for most students — see the Core vs Extended guide.

How many marks does my child need for a C grade?

Based on recent sessions, approximately 80–95 raw marks out of 200 (Papers 2 + 4 combined). However, grade boundaries shift each session — always check the official Cambridge boundary tables for the relevant session.

Should my child take Core or Extended?

Extended, in almost all cases where there is any university ambition in a maths-related field. See the full Core vs Extended guide.

Are online tuition sessions as effective as in-person?

Yes — and in many respects more effective. A Cambridge specialist online consistently outperforms a generalist in-person tutor. See the online vs in-person comparison.

What calculator should my child use?

Can my child resit if the results are disappointing?

Yes. IGCSE can be resitted in the next session. For a May/June result, the resit can be in October/November the same year. See the resit strategy guide.
