The move to a non-calculator Paper 2 (Extended) from 2025 is one of the most significant changes Cambridge 0580 students have faced in years. For a generation used to reaching for a calculator, it demands skills that need deliberate rebuilding — and the students who prepare for it specifically will have a real edge.
Rebuild Mental and Written Arithmetic
The first priority is fluency with arithmetic that a calculator used to handle: times tables, long multiplication and division, fractions, percentages, and operations with negatives. These feel basic, but under exam pressure without a calculator, hesitation here costs both time and accuracy. Regular short drills rebuild the fluency quickly.
Work in Exact Values
Non-calculator maths lives in exact values, not decimals. That means being comfortable leaving answers as fractions, surds (like √2), and multiples of π, and manipulating them confidently. Knowing the exact trig values for 30°, 45°, and 60° is essentially non-negotiable now.
Estimate and Sanity-Check
Without a calculator to confirm a result, estimation becomes a safety net. Rounding numbers to check an answer is “about right” catches the slips that a calculator would otherwise have flagged.
Practise the Right Way
The single most important step is to do past-paper questions genuinely without a calculator, even when it’s tempting. Simulating the real constraint is the only way to build the speed and confidence the paper now requires.
