In Geometry, most lost marks don’t come from not knowing the content — they come from a handful of avoidable slips that examiners see year after year. Here are the ones that cost Cambridge 0580 students the most, and how to stop making them.
1. Not stating angle reasons. Students calculate the correct angle but do not write the geometric reason, losing marks that are specifically allocated for reasoning. For example, writing angle ABC = 65 degrees without stating the reason is alternate angles between parallel lines.
2. Confusing circle theorems. There are several circle theorems and students mix them up, especially the angle at the centre theorem and the angles in the same segment theorem. For example, applying angle at the centre is twice the angle at circumference when both angles are at the circumference, giving a halved answer when the angles should be equal.
3. Incorrect scale factor direction in similarity. Students divide the wrong way round when finding the scale factor, getting the reciprocal of the correct value. For example, if the small triangle has side 4 cm and the large triangle has side 10 cm, writing the scale factor as 4/10 = 0.4 when enlarging from small to large (should be 10/4 = 2.5).
The Bigger Picture
Geometry is unique in IGCSE Mathematics because marks are specifically awarded for stating reasons. Never write just a number as your answer in a geometry question. Every angle must be accompanied by its geometric reason. Learn all circle theorems and practise identifying which one applies. For similarity and congruence, always state the scale factor direction and the congruence condition. Clear diagrams with labelled angles will help you see the relationships.
