The Choice You Have to Make
IB students take one of two maths courses — Analysis & Approaches (AA) or Applications & Interpretation (AI) — each available at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL). AA is the more pure, algebra- and calculus-heavy route favoured for STEM and economics; AI leans toward modelling, statistics, and real-world application. The right choice depends on the student’s strengths and their intended degree.
How IGCSE Extended Informs the Decision
A student who found IGCSE Extended algebra and functions genuinely comfortable — not just passable — is well placed for AA, especially at HL. A student who coped but found algebra a grind may thrive in AI, or in AA at SL. IGCSE Extended is the honest evidence base for this decision; the grade alone doesn’t tell the whole story, but fluency in algebra does.
Where Students Feel the Jump
Both IB courses move quickly and, especially at HL, demand mathematical communication and reasoning beyond IGCSE’s more procedural style. AA HL in particular assumes algebraic fluency from day one. As with any transition, the students who struggle are usually those carrying quiet IGCSE gaps into a faster course.
