IGCSE Maths Revision During Chinese New Year Break

IGCSE Maths and Chinese New Year: Finding the Balance

Chinese New Year (Tahun Baru Cina) typically falls in late January or early February — squarely within the most important IGCSE revision period for May/June candidates. For Malaysian families, this creates a tension between family obligations and exam preparation.

This guide offers a realistic balance.

The Reality: A 5-Day Window, Not 0 Days

Chinese New Year celebrations in most Malaysian families are concentrated in the first 2–3 days. By Day 3–4, the intensity of visits and gatherings typically reduces. The full 2-week school break contains at least 5–7 days of useful revision time.

The mistake is treating the entire break as revision-impossible. The reality is 5 productive days is available to almost every student.

A Realistic 5-Day Chinese New Year Revision Plan

Day 1 (Eve/First Day): No maths. Family time. Rest properly — you need this.

Day 2 (Second Day): Light maths only. Review your error log from the last past paper (30 minutes). No new content.

Day 3: 1.5 hours of focused revision. One specific weak topic — not a full paper. Topic drilling only.

Day 4: 1.5 hours. Another weak topic or continue from Day 3.

Day 5: First full Paper 2 (70 marks, 90 minutes) under timed conditions. Mark it after. Record the score.

Remaining days: Continue with past paper practice as energy allows. The goal is not to complete every hour of planned revision — it is to maintain momentum rather than losing 2 weeks of habit.

Why Maintaining Momentum Matters

The cognitive research on maths learning shows that spaced practice — a little every few days — is significantly more effective than cramming after gaps. Two weeks of complete rest from maths can cost 10–15% of recently learned topic retention.

5 days of light practice during Chinese New Year prevents this backslide and keeps the momentum built since January.

Tuition During Chinese New Year

Teacher Rig schedules limited sessions during the Chinese New Year break for students who want to maintain momentum. These are usually in Days 3–7 of the break, when family commitments have reduced.
