Paper 4 (Extended, calculator) rewards students who treat the calculator as a precision tool rather than a crutch. The marks lost here are rarely about not knowing the maths — they’re about inefficiency and avoidable input errors. A few habits make a real difference.
Know Your Specific Model
Most Malaysian students use a Casio fx-570 or similar. Before the exam, you should be fluent with its specific functions: the fraction key, the ANS key for carrying exact values forward, table mode for graphs, and how it handles degrees vs radians (always check you’re in degrees for 0580 trigonometry).
Carry Exact Values, Round at the End
The biggest calculator mistake is rounding partway through a multi-step question and carrying that rounded figure forward. Use the ANS and memory keys to keep full accuracy until the final line, then round to the required degree. Early rounding is a classic accuracy-mark killer.
Use It to Check, Not Just to Compute
The calculator is also a checking tool: substitute your answer back into an equation, verify a solved value, or sanity-check a probability is between 0 and 1. On Paper 4 you have time to verify the questions that carry the most marks.
Don’t Let It Replace Working
A calculator answer with no working can still lose method marks if the final value is wrong. Show the steps even when the calculator does the arithmetic — the examiner needs to see the method.
