A grade B in Cambridge 0580 is a genuinely solid result. For most pathways it’s more than enough, and the instinct to immediately “fix” it isn’t always right. The decision depends entirely on where your child is heading next.
When a B Is Absolutely Fine
If your child is moving into A-levels or a foundation programme in non-maths-heavy subjects, a B comfortably clears the typical minimums. Chasing an A purely for the certificate, at the cost of energy needed elsewhere, is rarely worth it. A B is a pass that keeps the great majority of doors open.
When You Might Push Higher
A B becomes worth revisiting if your child is heading toward a maths-intensive route — engineering, economics, computer science, actuarial studies — or toward competitive universities that read every grade. In those cases the issue isn’t the certificate; it’s that the underlying foundation needs to be A-grade-solid to cope with what comes next.
Resit, or Just Strengthen?
A formal resit only makes sense if a specific higher grade is needed for entry. Often the better move is not a resit at all but strengthening the foundation before A-level maths begins — closing the specific gaps that kept the grade at a B, so the step up doesn’t expose them.
The Real Question
Don’t ask “is a B good enough?” in the abstract. Ask “good enough for the specific path my child wants?” The answer is usually yes — and where it isn’t, the fix is targeted, not wholesale.
