How to Get A* in IGCSE Maths: A Complete Strategy Guide

By Teacher Rig ·

What Does A* in IGCSE Maths Actually Require?

Based on recent Cambridge sessions, the A* boundary on IGCSE 0580 Extended is typically around 140–155 raw marks out of 200 combined (Papers 2 and 4). That is approximately 70–77% of total marks.

This means an A* student is not expected to answer every question perfectly. They must, however:

  • Score very high marks on standard questions (90%+ on routine algebra, number, and mensuration)
  • Score well on most Extended topics (trigonometry, vectors, probability)
  • Lose very few marks to careless errors or presentation gaps
  • Attempt and score partial marks on the hardest 2–3 questions on Paper 4

The Gap Between A and A*

Most A-grade students (approximately 120–138 raw marks) have lost marks in three specific areas:

  1. Careless errors — typically 8–15 marks lost to arithmetic errors, misread questions, or wrong calculator inputs
  2. Presentation gaps — 5–10 marks lost to missing working, missing geometry reasons, or unclear notation
  3. Hardest Paper 4 questions — often the final question on Paper 4 (12 marks) is partially or entirely missed

The gap between A and A* is almost never a knowledge gap. It is almost always errors and presentation.

The A* Preparation Strategy

1. Zero tolerance for careless errors. A* students check every answer before moving on. They verify arithmetic. They re-read the question after answering. This habit must be trained until it is automatic.

2. Perfect working discipline. Every step shown. Every method mark earned. No “magic” appearances of answers. Geometry reasons written in full.

3. Time management for Paper 4. A* students complete Paper 4 in 2 hours and use the remaining 30 minutes to check. Students who run out of time on Paper 4 are not A* candidates — they need to build speed through practice.

4. Master the top-scoring Extended topics. The topics that carry the most marks on Paper 4 and separate A from A* are:

  • Trigonometry (sine/cosine rule, 3D problems): typically 10–14 marks
  • Vectors: 8–12 marks
  • Functions (composite, inverse): 6–10 marks
  • Calculus (differentiation, area under curve): 6–10 marks
  • Circle theorems: 6–8 marks

A student who scores 90%+ on all five of these topics is almost certainly at A* level.

5. Practise the hardest past paper questions. The final question on Paper 4 is often a proof, a challenging trigonometry problem, or a multi-step vectors question. These are worth 10–12 marks and are left blank or partially answered by most students. A* candidates practise these questions specifically.
