Best International Schools for Maths in Kuala Lumpur

By Teacher Rig · · Updated 15 March 2026

Choosing a School with Strong Maths Provision

Kuala Lumpur is home to a remarkable concentration of international schools, giving parents more choice than almost anywhere else in Southeast Asia. If your child has a particular aptitude for mathematics — or needs strong support to build their maths skills — the school’s approach to maths teaching matters. Not all international schools are equal in this regard.

This guide looks at some of the most well-regarded international schools in the KL area, focusing specifically on their mathematics programmes, IGCSE results, and overall approach to the subject. Keep in mind that every child is different, and the “best” school depends on your child’s individual needs.

Garden International School (GIS)

Garden International School in Mont Kiara is one of the longest-established British curriculum schools in Malaysia, founded in 1951. It follows the English National Curriculum leading to IGCSE and A-Levels.

Maths highlights:

  • Consistently strong IGCSE Mathematics results, with a high proportion of students achieving A* and A grades.
  • Sets students by ability for maths, allowing differentiated teaching that challenges top performers while supporting those who need more help.
  • Offers both IGCSE Mathematics (0580) and Additional Mathematics (0606) for able students.
  • Strong progression to A-Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

GIS benefits from experienced maths teachers and relatively small class sizes compared to some other KL schools. The setting system means your child is more likely to be taught at an appropriate pace.

Alice Smith School

Alice Smith School operates across two campuses — the primary campus in Jalan Bellamy and the secondary campus in Seri Kembangan. It is a British curriculum school with a long history in KL, established in 1946.

Maths highlights:

  • Excellent IGCSE results across all subjects, with maths being a particular strength.
  • Emphasises problem-solving and mathematical reasoning alongside procedural skills.
  • Offers a strong enrichment programme for mathematically gifted students, including participation in UKMT challenges and similar competitions.
  • Small school community fosters close teacher-student relationships, which benefits students who need individual attention.

Alice Smith is known for its nurturing environment, making it a particularly good choice for students who may lack confidence in maths but have the potential to improve with the right support.

Sri KDU International School

Sri KDU has multiple campuses, with the Kota Damansara campus being one of the most established. They offer the Cambridge curriculum leading to IGCSE and A-Levels.

Maths highlights:

  • Invests in technology-enhanced maths teaching, incorporating tools like GeoGebra and graphing software into lessons.
  • Offers strong academic support programmes for students who are struggling with maths fundamentals.
  • Active maths enrichment activities including internal and external competitions.
  • Good track record of students progressing to STEM courses at university.

Sri KDU is worth considering for families who want a school that balances academic rigour with a supportive environment. Their multiple campuses offer different price points, which is useful for budget-conscious families.

Nexus International School

Located in Putrajaya, Nexus follows the Cambridge curriculum and is part of the Taylor’s Education Group. It is known for its modern campus and well-resourced facilities.

Maths highlights:

  • Strong emphasis on collaborative learning in maths, with students working in groups to solve problems.
  • Teachers use diagnostic assessments to identify gaps and tailor support.
  • Offers IGCSE Mathematics and Additional Mathematics.
  • Benefits from good facilities including dedicated maths resource areas.

Nexus tends to attract families from the Putrajaya and southern KL area. It is a solid choice for students who thrive in a collaborative learning environment.

Epsom College in Malaysia

Located in Bandar Enstek near KLIA, Epsom College is a co-educational school following the British curriculum. It is linked to the prestigious Epsom College in Surrey, England.

Maths highlights:

  • Very strong academic results, regularly among the top performers in Malaysia for IGCSE.
  • Small class sizes allow for personalised attention in maths.
  • Strong boarding option that provides structured evening study time, which benefits maths revision.
  • Excellent progression rates to top UK universities for STEM subjects.

Epsom is a premium option and the boarding model may suit families who want a structured academic environment. The school’s small size means teachers know every student individually.

What to Look for When Choosing

Beyond individual school reputations, here are factors to consider when evaluating a school’s maths provision:

Class sizes. Smaller classes mean more individual attention. For maths in particular, the ability to ask questions and get immediate feedback is extremely valuable. Ask the school what their average maths class size is.

Setting or streaming. Schools that set students by maths ability can better match the teaching pace to each student. Ask whether the school groups students by ability for maths and how they decide which group each student joins.

IGCSE results. Ask specifically for maths results, not just overall school results. A school may have excellent English and Humanities results but mediocre maths performance. Request the percentage of students achieving A*-A and A*-C in Mathematics 0580.

Teacher qualifications and retention. High staff turnover disrupts learning. Ask how long the current maths teachers have been at the school and what their qualifications are. Teachers with specific experience of the Cambridge 0580 syllabus are ideal.

Support and enrichment. A good maths department caters to both ends of the spectrum — offering extra support for struggling students and enrichment or extension work for able mathematicians.

Progression data. Ask what proportion of students go on to study A-Level Mathematics, and what grades they achieve. This gives you a sense of how well the IGCSE programme prepares students for the next level.

A Note on Supplementary Support

Even the best school may not provide everything your child needs, particularly if they have specific gaps or are aiming for the very top grades. Many students at top KL international schools supplement their school maths with targeted tutoring, especially in the run-up to exams. This is entirely normal and not a reflection of the school’s quality — it simply reflects the fact that personalised one-to-one attention is more efficient than classroom teaching for addressing individual weaknesses.
